When is the right time to approach a parent and suggest they need care? Is there a right time or do we just wait for the inevitable day when something happens to force you into making those uncomfortable decisions to finally say “we need some help”. The word care has such emotions attached to it, and when it’s used in the context of the parent(s) needing to be cared for, it’s even more emotive. As a family, we have been able to talk openly about how we meet our needs in the long term.

I’m 45 years old with parents in their 70’s, both have debilitating health conditions but thankfully have been managing on their own, but it feels like a time bomb and the thoughts of what does the future look like, are constantly on my mind. It doesn’t help that I’ve worked in Social Care & Housing for the last 23 years and whilst I’ve tried my hardest to support many families through one of the most difficult times of their lives, I’ve never found the most perfect solution for them, other than managing to get by.

For me, the perfect solution is continuing to live an ordinary life, just like you have always done before, whilst being supported in the background. You shouldn’t have to suddenly live your life around a care service, just because you need a little help. I am most comfortable with the Personal Assistant approach to supporting people, because this vastly improves continuity of care and allows people the time and opportunity to build relationships, developing trust which makes them feel safe in an environment they wish to live in. Personal Assistants on the other hand need to be supported within an infrastructure where they are valued and rewarded for the outcomes they achieve and feel they are making a difference to the people they support.

So the time bomb continues to tick, and rather than sit and worry about it, I need to make some decisions about how I am going to support my parents to continue living the life they love and would find very hard to give up and of course the promise I made….

The promise…I remember so clearly. My Mum & I were just getting into the car, following a visit to my Aunt in her care home. My Mum uttered the words “please don’t send me or your dad to a home”. Of course not, I promised, “I shall look after you” when it comes to you needing care, knowing inevitably they will.

I don’t need to wait until the inevitable happens because I, like many other families can now use the service of organisations that help people in their own homes. However I will be forever grateful that I came across Adapt & Assist (www.adaptassist.com) when I was searching on the internet desperately looking for the right help for us. Adapt & Assist provides a new approach to supporting people, their home and the wider family for life, without the need to go into long term care. This is achieved through integrating the needs of people, the home, adaptations and technology to provide the most appropriate solution within an affordable budget.

My Mother is finding the stairs difficult following a stroke. There is no way she needs any care support at the moment, but she could if she falls on the stairs and hurts herself or has another stroke. Thinking ahead, Adapt & Assist have begun by installing a second handrail on the stairs which she has started to use. The next step will be to install a Stairaid, a new invention which provides safety whilst keeping people mobile on the stairs before any decision needs to be made about a stairlift. My Dad on the other hand has very poor circulation due to diabetes and therefore the adaptation on the stairs will help him as well.

So far, the cost has been small, and meets my parents’ immediate needs, whilst allowing them to still feel in control and confident to continue living their normal life. I on the other hand am so thankful knowing that the service of Adapt & Assist is there in the background, should I need further support, such as a Personal Assistant to provide a little help for them around the house or continuing their social life.

Adapt & Assist was created to support families like mine, although I recognise that most families don’t have the knowledge and support to find help and therefore automatically enter the social care system and financial assessment cycle, receiving the bare minimum to get by. Adapt & Assist appear to take the opposite approach and focus on the person, what they can provide that will make the most difference at a cost that they can afford. In a world of increased demands on public budgets, more people will need to buy their own care and support services. Adapt & Assist (www.adaptassist.com) is good for this as my parents are only buying what they actually need, when they need it.
A lifetime Support Programme, gives the whole family peace of mind, makes decision making easier and stops that time bomb ticking away.

I am confident that as a family, we can continue to find our own support, without relying on the needs of Social Services, which we can afford and enables me to contribute alongside Adapt & Assist wherever I can, even when the inevitable day of needing full support finally arrives.

If you’re looking for a list of the strongest medicinal drugs around, Methotrexate would definitely be one. Not only is the drug prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease and other auto-immune diseases, but it’s also given to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methotrexate has considerable properties and effects on the body. The drug inhibits the growth and spread of cells that are notorious for growing and producing quickly, such as cancer cells. When given at the right dosage, Methotrexate can really save lives as well as keep people from succumbing to a dependent state. But when taken carelessly, the drug can give one severe repercussions.

The various Methotrexate side effects are so potentially fatal that the drug is not prescribed without the doctor warning the patient to practice birth control at all times, for Methotrexate can cause extremely severe birth defects to unborn babies and, in some cases, even death. Even women who are breastfeeding are made to stop giving their babies their own breast milk if they are prescribed Methotrexate, for the drug can filter through the milk and harm the baby.

For the patients to stay as safe as possible from the side effects of Methotrexate, doctors don’t usually give a high dose at the start, unless it’s extremely necessary. This means that Methotrexate is more commonly given in a weekly injection rather than daily or every other day dosages, for the weekly shots generally give less risk of side effects. For early stages of rheumatoid arthritis, the maximum weekly injection is around 20 mg, although doctors may start with a much smaller dose, around 5 to 10 mg, to first check how the patient reacts to the drug.

Aside from injections, Methotrexate can come in oral form, and this method is better for those who only need small doses. Injections are given for cancer patients, but even in the most severe chemotherapy sessions, Methotrexate is carefully monitored for the right injection dosage, especially if the patient is also taking other medicines. Methotrexate can cause drug interactions or increase the possibility of Atenolol or Coumadin side effects, even if it doesn’t interact with those medicines. The dosages of Methotrexate for cancer patients differ all the time, depending on factors like the severity of the illness and the patient’s receptivity to the drug, and once the right dosage is found that shows control over the cancer with no sign of side effect on the patient, then the dosage is maintained to help the patient get well as soon as possible.

With the current standards of beauty, inclining towards the light, thin and lissom, losing weight and keeping the pounds off are major considerations in almost everyone’s minds. Being fashionably thin, regardless of initiatives and advocacies by certain sectors of the population to counteract this tendency, it still prevails most strongly, especially among the young. Being fat is ugly and being reed thin is the way to go. It is therefore no wonder that weight loss advertisements abound in all forms of media.

Many exotic diets promise quick weight loss results. It is not unusual to have individuals practically starving themselves to achieve the “ideal weight” that sometimes it borders on the ridiculous or the dangerous, even. Very often, however, said weight loss diets do not take into consideration the aspects of one’s age, physical built or even racial background. Instead, they lump everyone into one general category of what the ideal weight must be given one’s height and age. This can be most frustrating to those who are not endowed with the requisite height and whose body shape does not conform to the willowy and tall ideal.

Many teen-agers become exasperated when they look at themselves and see something else far from the desired statistics in the mirror. A lot of jokes are made about “bat wings,” “thunder thighs,”
“turkey wattles” and lugging “spare tires” around the middle, making anyone with such “beauty attributes” the object of snide remarks, like it is almost a crime not to be thin and svelte.

All these greatly contribute to the pressure to embark on weight loss regimens to take the pounds off, to firm up sagging muscles, to lose the bulges – all part of the quest to be beautiful! Lose weight at all costs! It feels good when it happens. Nevertheless, there are times when they do not. The weight loss efforts can be met by stubborn fat and cellulite deposits all in the wrong places. From the point of view of medicine, health or physical fitness a good and effective weight loss regimen is supposed to reduce the total body mass as a result of a loss of fluids, body fat or adipose tissues. This can only be possible if the amount of calorie intake is less than the amount of calories burned by the body through vigorous exercise or other strenuous physical activities. However, even with these courses of action, weight loss may not come easy especially the older one gets.

In addition, women tend to put on more pounds as they grow older or go through the menopause period. Women also have more fat tissues on their bodies than men do. It is also more difficult for women to shed off the pounds once they get them on. One’s genes also determine to a large extent how fast or how slow the weight loss will be. Some just have faster metabolic rates so they burn the calories faster. Others have more sluggish systems so that whatever calories they ingest stay within the system.

It is always advisable for anyone wanting to go on a weight loss regimen to consult with his or her family doctor first before embarking on one. Just to make sure that there will be no harm done to your system.
