The Chemex

I love my glass Chemex, it gets a lot of play in our coffee lab at project vvlgar and even our chemist friend is amazed by its design.  I suppose she should be, it was actually invented by a chemist.  It produces six cups of very excellent extraction (arguably the best in the world), and was invented strictly for the purpose of brewing the best possible extraction.

For the true whole bean coffee aficionado the Chemex is a must have, because no other method can pull the same flavor notes and nuances from a bean.

The Hario v60

This is my personal favorite method of brewing.  It is made of ceramic, is very durable and doesn’t have any fragile parts.  It makes a single cup of coffee at a time, and is designed to be sat on top of a coffee mug to be used.  Like the Chemex it is a pour over apparatus, but unlike the Chemex it doesn’t not have its own carafe.

At first this may seem like a disadvantage, but it is in fact very handy – especially when traveling or if you just want a single cup of java.

The Bodum Chambord

This is the only french press that I have included because it is without a doubt the best of them all.  We use ours on occasion (mostly when entertaining guests) and it is a very popular item with everyone who drinks coffee.

The Chambord allows for a great full immersion, which creates an earthy, full bodied cup of coffee.  There are certain elements of that ‘mouth feel’ that other methods of brewing cannot replicate at all.

For this reason we give the Bodum Chambord our Honorary Mention.  It is a fantastic device and is worthy of much praise.
