How To Create Your Own Small Survival Kits

Posted by:  | Category: Hobby & Recreation

The goal of this article is to outline how create your own survival kit. The sizes we will be covering are for a 1b coffee can, and a pocket sized kit made from an old tobacco or Altoids tin.

OLD TOBACCO OR ALTOIDS TIN

This kit is designed to fit into an old tobacco or Altoids tin, and can be carried in your pocket wherever you go. While it is pretty basic for a survival kit, remember that a decent kit you actually have on hand when you need is infinitely better than an awesome kit with all the trimmings that you don’t have on you when you need it.

A Swiss army knife- many possible uses, as each blade has a different purpose.
A zippo lighter- stronger and more durable than normal lighters or matches.
A small compass- so you can find your way back to safety and help.
A small mirror- for inspecting wounds; signaling to help.
A small pencil wrapped in paper- for taking notes, addresses, etc.
Fishing wire and hooks- can be used to set up passive fishing lines you return to later.
Needles and dental floss- for sewing/stitching fabric. The dental floss can serve as fishing line as well.

1lb COFFEE CAN
This kit is designed to fit into a 1lb coffee tin. It’s an ideal size to put in the trunk of your vehicle, with 1-2 Liters of water you rotate every few months.

We’ll include the items from our smaller kit:

A Swiss army knife
A zippo lighter
A small compass
A small mirror
A small pencil wrapped in paper
Fishing wire and hooks
Needles and dental floss

And we’ll add some additional items:

A whistle to signal to the others; to scare off animals.
20+ feet of nylon rope- can have many uses; bundling firewood, creating a shelter, strapping something to your vehicle, etc.
A candle wrapped in aluminum foil- The candle is for light and heat. The foil can have multiple purposes.
A poncho- protection from the rain and snow. Can be used to help build a shelter as well. Choose a bright color to help with visibility.
2 large garbage bags- for collecting garbage and waste. They can also be fashioned into ponchos, to keep you warm and dry in tough conditions.
Money- some extra from gas, a few quarters to use payphones (do those things even exist anymore?)

Stuff wax paper into the tin to keep the items from moving around. The wax paper can also be used to help start fires.

Good luck and stay prepared!
